About Leagues & Cups

An overview of the various tournaments Queens Park operate and play in and information on how to get involved. All tournaments listed are over the board. See the Calendar for a full list of dates. Contact us if you have any queries.

Glasgow Chess League

When it runs: October – April.

Match start time: Between 7.15-7.45pm depending on the opposing team.

Location: Home matches take place in The Bungo. For away matches, we travel to the opposition’s club night (which may not fall on a Tuesday).

How it works: Over the season, each team plays every opposing team once, either at home or away.

Players in a team per match: 6 in Division 2, 4 in Division 3, 4 in Division 4.

Time control: 75 minutes per player for all moves.

How to join: We have teams in Divisions 2, 3 and 4. We will assign players to teams based on rating strength and how often they wish to play league games.

Dumbarton Chess League

When it runs: October – April.

Match start time: Between 7.15-7.45pm depending on the opposing team.

Location: Home matches take place in The Bungo. For away matches, we travel to the opposition’s club night (which may not fall on a Tuesday).

How it works: Over the season, each team plays every opposing team once, either at home or away.

Players in a team per match: 4. 

Time control: 75 minutes per player for all moves.

How to join: We have one team in Division 2. We will assign players to teams based on rating strength and how often they wish to play league games.

Scottish National Chess League

When it runs: Five Sundays between October – April. 2 rounds per day (aside from the final day with 1 round).

Match start times: 10am and 3pm.

Location: Carnegie Conference Centre, Dunfermline.

How it works: Each team plays nine rounds against opposing teams.

Players in a team per match: 5.

Time control: 60 minutes per player + 30 seconds increment per move.

How to join: We plan to have one team in the lowest division – joining details will be shared with Club members closer to the time.

Spens Cup

When it runs: February – May.

Match start time: 2pm.

Location: Teams all over Scotland take part so matches are held in various places –  if our opposing team is more than 80 miles away we will look to meet in the middle.

How it works: This is a knockout tournament. Teams are drawn to play one game, either home or away. The winner progresses to the next Cup round.

Players in a team per match: 5.

Time control: 90 minutes per player + 30 seconds increment per move.

How to join: Captain will select Club players based on playing strength. 

Note: The two finalists qualify for the Richardson Cup the following season. Those knocked out in early rounds of the Spens Cup go into the linked consolation tournament, the Campbell Rosebowl.
