About Leagues & Cups

An overview of the various tournaments Queens Park operate and play in for 2022/23, and information on how to get involved. All tournaments listed are over the board. See the Calendar for a full list of dates. Contact us if you have any queries.

Beltrami Club Championship

When it runs: Nov – May.

Match start time: 6.45pm.

Location: The Bungo (unless you and your opponent need to arrange an alternative venue).

How it works: All Club members can join the Club Championship. After Round 1, players are paired based on their scores i.e. a player with 0.5 will play against someone else with 0.5. There are 5 rounds in total.

Time control: 60 minutes per player for all moves.

How to join: Opt in to the Beltrami Club Championship when you become a member of the Club.

Queens Park Leaderboard

When it runs: Every club night.

Match start time: Any time during the evening.

Location: The Bungo.

How it works: Play a timed match with a clock, then take a results slip and note your names and the result. The results will feed into our Queens Park Club Leaderboard – this isn’t an official rating, just for fun.

Time control: 10+0, 15+0 or 30+0 – your choice.

How to join: Everyone at the Club (members and non-members) can join – just pick up a results slip.

Glasgow Chess League

When it runs: October – April.

Match start time: Between 7.15-7.45pm depending on the opposing team.

Location: Home matches take place in The Bungo. For away matches, we travel to the opposition’s venue (which may not fall on a Tuesday).

How it works: Over the season, each team plays every opposing team twice – once at home and once away.

Players in a team per match: 4.

Time control: 75 minutes per player for all moves.

How to join: We have one team in the Glasgow League (Division 3b). Team captain selects Club players based on playing strength.

Dumbarton Chess League

When it runs: October – April.

Match start time: Between 7.15-7.45pm depending on the opposing team.

Location: Home matches take place in The Bungo. For away matches, we travel to the opposition’s venue (which may not fall on a Tuesday).

How it works: Over the season, each team plays every opposing team twice – once at home and once away.

Players in a team per match: 4.

Time control: 75 minutes per player for all moves.

How to join: We have two teams in the Dumbarton league – one each in Division 1 and Division 2. Our Division 2 team is aimed at players who are new to league chess and who would like a chance to try playing longer time controls. Captains will put calls out for matches in both Divisions and all Club members can put themselves forward for selection in response.

Scottish National Chess League

When it runs: One Sunday per month between Jan – April. 2 rounds per day. This schedule may change in season 2023/24.

Match start times: 10am and 3pm.

Location: Carnegie Conference Centre, Dunfermline.

How it works: Each team plays seven rounds against opposing teams.

Players in a team per match: 5.

Time control: 60 minutes per player + 30 seconds increment per move.

How to join: We have two teams in Division Four of the Scottish National Chess League. All Club Members can put themselves forward for selection and the Captains will choose teams.

Spens Cup

When it runs: February – May.

Match start time: 2pm.

Location: Teams all over Scotland take part so matches are held in various places –  if our opposing team is more than 80 miles away we will look to meet in the middle.

How it works: This is a knockout tournament. Teams are drawn to play one game, either home or away. The winner progresses to the next Cup round.

Players in a team per match: 5.

Time control: 90 minutes per player + 30 seconds increment per move.

How to join: Captain will select Club players based on playing strength.

Note: The two finalists qualify for the Richardson Cup the following season. Those knocked out in early rounds of the Spens Cup go into the linked consolation tournament, the Campbell Rosebowl.
